My HDD is... cheap*. I want to upgrade it but I only have one sata cable at the moment so the cheap one's gotta go. How do I transfer the data from one to the other? USB or something?

Solution

The Old drive and the new drive have to be in at the same time that is why I suggested you need to buy this. Because you must have either 2 Sata cables or this:

Hi there JamesPeladeau,

As Aleszandro143 already suggested, you need to use some cloning software. Though, keep in mind that in case your current drive is failing, you can consider performing a clean install as well.
Apart from that, you need to attach the drive to your system either internally(if you have a desktop computer) or externally(in case you have a laptop).
In order to attach it internally, you will need SATA + power cable. In case you want to attach it externally, you will need SATA to USB cable + external power source.

Alright, so I need to download software that will copy the data from original drive. After that's done, I replace my drive then copy the data from the software to the new drive and I should be good to go. Is that right?

It's on my desktop

So, either way I need 2 sata cables. If that's the case I might as well just add the HDD and get that much more memory space. My PSU is going to be the antec hcg-520. I'm adding the zotac gtx 970 to my build (requires 145w), so the PSU is more than enough to power my card, but will it be enough to power my whole build?

Yes you power supply should be enough to power the entire build. But if you're going to buy a new power supply, then I would suggest getting something with 550W+, it'd be better to have a 600W to cover any over clock

Well I'm not planning on overlocking and I'm in university right now so I don't have loads of money to spend. The 520 was just right so I figured what the heck. besides, my parents' desktop broke down recently so any old parts I have will be passed onto them ;p. Worst case scenario I buy another PSU in a while and give my parents the 520
