I'm upgrading my 7y.o rig with all new components,
This is the rig:

- GA-B250M-DS3H -Motherboard
- Core i5 7600K 3.8GHz -CPU
- Hyper 212 X -cpu cooler
- Vengeance LPX 2400Mhz 2x8GB -RAM (ddr4)
- 1TB 7200RPM . -HDD
- GeForce GTX1080 Strix A Gaming -GPU
- 600W/650W -PSU

So my questions is;
1. Will the setup work?
2. Do I need a newer/better cpu to make the pc handle/fully use the 1080's power

Solution

Totally powerful enough.

You see I'm buying everything all new, but I'm unsure the cpu is powerful enough to handle the 1080. So that is why I was wondering if I should switch the cpu with one that is better.

Your CPU looks fine. I'm not familiar with your specific Mobo, but if it is like mine it will recognize your K series (unlocked) CPU and automatically Turbo Boost it to 4.2 GHz without you needing to do anything with voltages, etc. So I can't see your CPU being a bottleneck.

If I was going to make any suggestions, I'd recommend an SSD for your OS and Games (Program Files). It does make a difference in loading files from disk to memory. Some games do a lot of loading of files and an SSD will make for smoother playing. Bumping that memory to 32 GBs wouldn't be a bad thing to do but this could be left to a later upgrade as most games will reside comfortably inside 16 GB without the need to cache older pages of memory to hard drive. But you can never have too much memory.

Use a Power Supply calculator after you have decided on all your components and make sure you have sufficient power. Look at the PSUs rating. Just read the fine print on the PSUs and make sure they deliver the amount of power you require regardless of what the name states.

Finally, you don't mention the case or cooling fans. Make sure you have a well ventilated case. Particularly make sure your GPU has good access to fresh air and that the Mobo is well ventilated as well. This cannot be stressed enough with high end GPUs. Their fans need to push a lot of air thru the card when you are taxing them which means they need access to a lot of air to push.
