I have a Gateway DX4860-EF22P.
It has an I7 2600 3.4 GHz.
8 Gigs of RAM.
450 Watt PSU.
DX4860 motherboard.
NVIDIA GT 520.
I'm want to upgrade it but I don't know what it can support. I'm going to upgrade the power supply and give is 16 gigs of RAM. I'm looking into getting an AMD R9 290X but will it work? Will my motherboard or possessor hold it back? I have also been thinking of redoing the whole thing with a new case and motherboard with the same processor (Unless it bottlenecks the system). and whatever other parts I can save money on from this system. I eventually want a high end gaming rig with Crossfire 290X's. Or is there a better GPU that I could get for the same price? Any help would be really appreciated. :)

Solution
If you're gonna be upgrading that much, just scrap your entire current rig. Your stuff is pretty old. Since you mentioned high end, here's a build for you i7, 16gb of RAM, all that neat stuff. http://pcpartpicker.com/user/joshj2398/saved/3MsN I wouldn't recommend the 290x since, well, it's overpriced (unless you plan on mining, then get the 290X). Since you're going high end, 1 1080p monitor is pointless. If you wanna truly take advantage of this rig, you're gonna go 4k and not just any 4k, 144hz 4k for gaming. For the H100i rad, you're gonna wanna run that thing in push for ease of cleaning. If your environment isn't too dusty, go ahead and throw in another set of fans for push pull. If you feel like the PSU is overkill swap it for...

If you feel like the PSU is overkill swap it for anything else that's reliable and >850w. If you wanna keep the CPU, just swap the motherboard with one with a proper socket.

Solution
That i7 2600 is fine paired up with anything really, there's no big difference between a Sandy Bridge and a Haswell i7, you could migrate your memory and CPU to your new build and you should be fine (with a compatible LGA1155 mobo)

If you're keeping your current setup, you'd definitely want a decent 600W unit (from XFX/Antec/Seasonic etc.) for a single 290x, or a decent 850W unit for Crossfire (that's probably down the line since I doubt that your current mobo allows for multi GPU configurations)

I already have 4k monitor and all of the storage components so if I subtract one from the price it comes to $3209. its a good price for all of that but I wanna start with one gpu and upgrade as the money comes in. so I would probably buy the other screens and second 780 a little later because I dont have that kind of money right now. but yeah. if I subtract a few items then I think this is the build for me. thanks so much Josh

if I keep my current possessor, buy another 8 gigs of ram instead of 16 because I already have 8, subtract the storage because I'm already set with 2.5 tb, buy one 780 or 290x for now, and stick with my current screen for a while and get the 1155 maximus mobo I would pay $1591 instead of $3761! woohoo lol. thanks guys! :)
