Hello, i dont know if it’s the right thread. But im looking to upgrade my computer soon, and im wondering if i should go for a ddr5 motherboard and ddr5 ram.

If you buy DDR 5 now, you will be faced with considerably faster DDR 5 in year or so as it matures, just like DDR 4 did.

Would that make you regret buying DDR 5 now?

I think there are a lot more DDR 4 motherboards to choose from now than DDR 5 boards. That might change within a year.

Being "future proof" usually collides with budgets, but maybe not in your case. Avoiding benchmarks can help you avoid buyer's remorse.

Well yeah, i think im not upgrading in the nearest 2-3 months atleast , maybe even not untill summer, so i dont know how much ddr5 has evolved by then, so i guess it would be better to decide when im actually going to buy it? I guess it would.

Or should i just wait till ddr5's prices drop near the same level of ddr4's prices now?

That's about where I am too.

I have the upgrade itch (not done it since 2016).

The problem is worsened now because you can't buy a DDR 4 board now and later decide you want to put DDR 5 in it. You'd have to change boards again to use DDR 5.

Yeah, thats the problem for me too, and i also forgot that ddr5 would require a new cpu too, so im not really sure if it's worth it for now. maybe in 2-4 years? Since i believe that ddr4 will do good for a pretty long time.

I checked some prices for the motherboards, rams, and lga 1700 cpus. With an i5 12600k , an z690 board, and 16gb ddr5 memory the total cost rounds up to around 1000€

Well, maybe I could satisfy my upgrade itch by buying stuff I could still re-use a year or two from now.........like a new boot drive or a new big SSD backup drive or a new monitor. And delay the new CPU, motherboard, and RAM for a year....the successor to Alder Lake will be out by then and the DDR 5 situation will be clearer.

The truth is my current CPU is plenty fast and all is working perfectly, so there's no good reason to update other than the urge and the fact that my stuff has about 35,000 hours on it.
