Solution
945G motherboards (s775) typically top-out with the E2xxx 'Allendales'

Though the clock speed would be significantly lower than your Pentium-D, your performance will be higher with an Allendale.

The 945Gs also take the old Cedar Mill Cellys -- which are infamous for over-clocking 'to the Moon...' :)

edit: This web site lists 'Conroe' support but as USAFRet noted, I highly suspect that would be dependent upon you motherboard CPU support list.

I remember this well because I built a rig for a guy with a Gigabyte 945G with a Celeron, and for years I kept pestering him to upgrade his CPU so I could buy it back for a suicide run

If it is a pre-made pc. "OEM" like an HP or a Dell you are more than likely out of luck.
