If you're reading this, allow me to say first:
I don't have the budget to build a fresh rig, otherwise Id go that route.
With that in mind, Im looking at upgrading my 2 year old current rig, which is a combination of new and pre-owned parts. On most games and editing software it runs great, but with some made in teh last year or so Ive noticed that my overall gameplay quality is no longer ideal. First noticed it when I got GTA V (steam) and it lagged to hell on recommended high settings. Yet I get 100+ FPS with teh shadow of mordor benchmark test and even get optimal marks on Steam VR and Oculus VR readiness tests. Am I right to blame my older hardware?
I have faster ram on it's way (ddr3-1600 4x4 16gb); the GPU and CPU are what Im most concerned about. I addressed the GPU in another post.

Specs: MSI X79A-GD45(8D) mobo
16GB (4x4) PNY ddr3 1333mhz ram- < soon to be Corsair XMS3 DDR3-1600 (4x4) 16GB
i7-3930k 6 core-12thread @3.2ghz
Zotac Amp! Edition (Nvidia) GTX 980- <later upgrade to 1070 TI(?)
EVGA superNOVA 850 psu
Windows 7 pro 64-bit

so, as the title reads, is my current CPU worth sticking with (an maybe OCing), or would I be better off upgrading to something with better single core performance and a lil more power like the 4930K or the Xeon?
Specs of each CPU:

i7-3930K
6 core
12 thread
unlocked
3.2Ghz base speed
3.8Ghz turbo speed
max ram support: ddr3-1600
Socket+chipset: LGA 2011 X79
TDP: 130W
released(M/Y): 8/2011

i7-4930K
6 core
12 thread
unlocked
3.4 Ghz base
3.9Ghz Turbo
ddr3-1866
LGA 2011 X79
130W
7/2013

Xeon E5-2687 v2
8 core
16 thread
Locked
3.4 Ghz base
4 Ghz Turbo
ddr3-1866
LGA 2011 X79
150W
7/2013

I'd buy the 1070 Ti before buying a new CPU. The 3930K still kicks butt and will not bottleneck a 1070 and will only bottleneck a 1080 in extreme situations. Thus, a fast CPU will only get you a very small performance increase (depends on the game/app of course). If the new CPU is going to cost more than $100 I doubt you will be happy with the expenditure.

Honestly I didn't even think about that, thank you! Considering the 1070's are going for as much (or less) than these CPu's used on ebay, that does look like a much better option. Time to start saving up I guess

Prices will drop even more when the 2070 comes out. Of course, by then you might want the 2070! Doh!

Commendable

I don't know much about that cooler but I don't see why it wouldn't help with a moderate overclock. You won't need much of an OC to see a nice improvement with these CPU's
