Upgrading Old CPU (Intel 945G Chipset). Best Core 2 Duo available?

I think you'll need to run CPU-Z and get more information about what CPU and motherboard you're running to get a good answer. Just knowing the chipset and a list of vaguely similar desktops with a wide array of configurations doesn't actually tell us what Socket 775 CPUs *your* specific motherboard supports. That none of the PCs in that list Core 2 Duos as explicitly supported is an inauspicious sign. That it's a custom, small form factor motherboard also makes me pessimistic, given those types of OEM motherboards frequently have significantly less impressive capabilities.

Ok, I've determined that the CPU is a Pentium 4 640 (http://ark.intel.com/products/27480/Intel-Pentium-4-Processor-640-supporting-HT-Technology-2M-Cache-3_20-GHz-800-MHz-FSB) and the chipset is i945p/pl/g/gz for Northbridge and the Southbridge is an Intel 82801GB I/O Controller.

If you're interested, here's the validation link from CPU-Z: http://valid.x86.fr/lpgdtg

I think I'll go with an E6700 (appearing as the best Core 2 Duo unless otherwise) for now.
