I have a PC which I am hoping to start upgrading, albeit gradually. I was looking into getting a case to start with (as everything is quite cramped and the cooling is inadequate at the moment), but then would also like some advise on what I should look to upgrade first. While price isn't a huge issue, I would prefer to keep it under $500 or so in total.

Any advise would be helpful, and if any more information is required, please ask. Thanks.

Motherboard Chipset: AMD 785G
Processor: AMD Phenom II X4 925 2.8 GHz
Memory: 8GB DDR3
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 ti
PSU: Rosewill CAPSTONE-650 650W Continuous @ 50°C, Intel Haswell Ready, 80 PLUS GOLD, ATX12V v2.31 & EPS12V v2.92,

I'd upgrade the case i'd get a Cooler Master HAF 912. It's only $50 at newegg. Also get a few fans just too keep things cool. For a cpu upgrade i'd get the fx6350 with a hyper 212 evo cooler for overclocking and a Gigabyte 990fx ud3 for the motherboard. then for a video card i'd get a gigabyte 7950. All that adds up to a little more than $500 but it will last you a while and you'll be able to max out pretty much any game out right now. Overclock the 6350 also.

Which component would be best to upgrade first? the GPU, or the motherboard and processor?

I'd say get the gpu first because you'd see the biggest performance increase. Then you'd have to the the motherboard and processor at the same time since they 6350 Isn't the socket you have now

*you'd have to get the motherboard and processor at the same time since the 6350 socket isn't compatible with your current cpu. There'll be a bottleneck with the new gpu and your current processor but that will go away with the 6350
