So I have just built my PC but I want to upgrade again.
Right now these are the specs I have:
GPU - Asus stx 970
CPU - i5 4590
Mobo - gigabyte gaming 5
RAM - some 8gb Kingston (its some cheap stuff that needs upgrading)
HDD- WD caviar green
CPU cooler - Article cooler rev 2
Psu- 600w corsair

I think that I'll definitely need a new HDD, RAM and PSU

But for a future upgrade I'm thinking of getting another GTX 970 in SLI and water cooling them and my CPU.

Just looking for a discussion on the performance increase, possible other options, would it be worth getting one 980 or the two 970's?

Solution
I wouldn't say you need new RAM, just add additional 8 GB if you really want to upgrade as speed has been proven to not mean much in terms of gaming performance. If you want to go with a single 980 600 W is fine but if you go 970 SLI then 600 is not enough, it will be really close. Instead get a EVGA SuperNOVA 750 B2 Bronze PSU.

I guess the more important question is, what do you do on your computer, do you game/edit/render? I personally think the best upgrade would be to add an SSD to your system and have your OS installed on that and use your HDD for storage.

The RAM I have isn't really that great. I'll probably get 16gb of HyperX fury but other than that I was looking into getting a WD black and maybe a SSD in the future.

On my PC I game, photo and video edit and render so it has to be pretty powerful all round.

I was exploring the possibilities of water cooling it using 3 separate all in on loops, I've not done any water cooling and i'm not sure on doing a custom loop so any suggestions are welcome

Actually your CPU is very good for video editing, as for RAM 16 GB is ideal for HD video, I'll give you a few tips on how to setup your storage for best performance (if you use Adobe PR to edit--don't have any experience using Sony's). However, water cooling is not required in your case, mainly because your CPU is locked meaning it has a locked multiplier. GPU doesn't matter here because the amount of CUDA cores do, not the core clock or anything on your GPU (when editing). You can easily overclock your GPU without a water block. Lastly, you didn't say what case you have but I recommend buying the Hyper 212 EVO if you think your CPU fan is making too much noise.
4 seperate drives, in your case you'd need 2 SSD's and 1 more HDD in order for this to work. If you are serious about performance. It's pretty good outside editing too, you could keep your documents and other files on the media drive.
#1 SSD: Programs & OS
#2 HDD: Media/Footage/Audio
#3 SSD: Scratch disk (not sure about Sony's software but in Adobe it is very much preferred)
#4 HDD: Exporting your final video, the main factor here is not the speed of the drive, but the CPU
Tip: Enable Cuda accelerated effects to be rendered using your GPU, to cut final render & time significantly after using effects
