[SOLVED] Upgrading PC from 2010

Hey everyone, I have a PC I built in 2010 that I think I finally need to upgrade. I've upgraded the GPU in the past to a R9 280, but I need to upgrade that as well now.
I'm usually delving into my backlog so I haven't needed the best/latest components. I would just like to secure another few years at 1080p playing games like division 2, battlefront 2, and dying light 2 comfortably(I'm noticing a trend -_-).

My current specs.
Radeon R9 280
Phenom II X4 955
Asus M4A89TD Pro USB3
2x4gb G.Skill Ripjaws 240 pin DDR3 1600
Corsair TX 650 PSU
Cooler master Hyper 212
1 TB HDD
1 TB Samsung 860 EVO SSD

I'd like to replace the case, since the one I have is too bulky for my taste. I was going to try to keep the PSU, hard drives, and RAM as well(8GB might be worth upgrading though...). I'd like to keep it under $800 if possible.

You need to get DDR4 RAM for the new platform, your old DDR3 RAM won't work.

The motherboard you have chosen might arrive with a BIOS that will not be compatible with the selected CPU. In that case you will have to upgrade the BIOS using its BIOS FLASHBACK+ feature.
Or select a different motherboard like the MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX or MSI B450 GAMING PLUS MAX...both come with BIOS support for the 3600 CPU.

Your existing ram is DDR3. Ryzen needs DDR4 to work.

Your motherboard may need a BIOS update to boot with your CPU. There is no way to know if the "MSI B450 GAMING PRO CARBON AC" will come with the correct BIOS as it is down to when the board was manufactured.

The MSI B450 A PRO MAX motherboard will have this update.

I also would throw a cheap tower cooler on the 3600. The stock cooler is adequate with decent case airflow, but it can get loud so I would spend the extra $20 on a tower cooler.

I really appreciate the feedback.
I did notice that I may need a bios update. Would it be possible to use my Phenom II X4 955 to flashback? I have seen a lot of builds using the Tomahawk so it might just be worth going with that one or the promax you mentioned.
What are your opinions on the GTX 1660 super? I have seen a lot of builds using the 5700 instead, but I guess that's based on budget.
On the CPU cooler would it be possible to reuse my old Hyper 212?

Your CPU cannot be used in these newer boards.

The B450 pro carbon can have the BIOS updated through flashback even without a CPU, so thats not a big deal.
The MSI B450 Tomahawk and Ryzen 3000 ready Tomahwk max boards are good. The MSI B450 A PRO is very simmilar to an MSI B450 Tomahawk max.


1660 super is pretty good. The 5700 offers a good bit more performance but at a higher cost and higher power consumption.
What is the resoltion and refresh rate of your monitor?

Your old H212 may not have the correct mounting hardware to fit on a modern socket AM4 motherboard.

I think you've convinced me to go with one of the MAX boards.

My monitor is an HP27w 1080p 60hz. I may upgrade it in the future, but honestly I don't mind it and plan to stay at 1080p for a while.

The Asus TUF is actually pretty solid motherboard, one of the best entry motherboards for the X570.

They are both very good motherboard.

The Tomahawk Max is on the previous B450 platform and the ASUS TUF GAMING is on a higher league, the updated X570 platforms , which also comes with more power delivery, PCI-e 4.0, more RAM support, 2x M.2 slots, etc.

It comes to, if you need or are you going to use those extra features?

More power requires better cooling and extra features could bring problems, specially if you re not going to take advantage of any of them.
Have you take in consideration replacing the proprietary Asus motherboard fan when it dies.
Does your Corsair PSU has 8-pin & 4-pin ATX power connectors required by that motherboard?

If possible try to sell it and just take the SSD from your old PC. It would be way better for you. A 10 years old PC is a 10 years old PC. Yes it would be expensive but it would be worth it.
