I currently use a i5-4460 and a EVGA GTX 960, but I plan on upgrading this summer. I plan to switch to either an i5-6600k or an i7-4790k, haven't picked yet, and a GTX 1070 when it releases. I usually play games like Arma 2 and and 3, DayZ, CS:GO, and others. its worth noting that I play at 1080p, but i plan on switching to 1440p eventually. My budget swings somewhere around $700, but I can probably go above that if I need to. I also do 3D rendering and video editing which is part of the reason I'm going overkill.

If the motherboard supports it, go for the i7 4790K, it won't help much for gaming, but the extra 4 threads should come in handy for your other tasks where it'll slightly outperform the 4 core 6600K.
You could move over to an entire Skylake i7 build, but the gains over your current setup aren't large enough to justify the high cost.

Opting for a GTX1070 is a smart move, it's overkill for 1080 but will shine at 1440 (consider a high refresh display-start another thread to discuss this option).

Would the Asrock H97 Anniversary support the i7-4790k?
