Upgrading PC with £500

Current PC specs are:
- GA-970A-UD3P motherboard
- Crucial Ballistix Sport 2 x 4G DDR3
- R9 270X
- AMD FX 6300
I want to upgrade my GPU, CPU which would mean a new motherboard.
I was thinking something like a 7600k a 1060 but could choose AMD, help on choosing an upgrade?

like the above poster says. when you have to include ddr4 ram and a new motherboard suddenly you're looking around the £550 and that is with a b250 motherboard which doesn't allow for overclocking .

Do you actually intend on Overclocking this system? If not you would save a good amount of cash by cutting down to a B250 Motherboard, stock cooler and locked CPU which can allow enough cash to perhaps upgrade RAM to 16GB and GPU to something like a RX 580 or possibly a GTX 1070.

i was thinking this but because the OP is coming from the fx series i assume he is used to overclocking .. would probably shave £100 off the cost if he ins't interested in overclocking though.

I've thought about this and tbh the only reason i wanted an unlocked CPU is for future proof. It isn't something i have to have. If i was to get a locked chip, which one should i get? Would 16GB be needed?

That's totally understandable. Another good idea might be to look into the Ryzen 5 series since they are all unlocked anyway and you can do it on cheaper boards (you don't need to spend a premium on a Z board, both X370 and the cheap B350 series boards can Overclock on Ryzen). But if not, an i5-7500 would be a good locked Intel CPU for Gaming.

For the RAM, 16GB isn't "needed" but as someone who upgraded from 8 > 16 only a few months ago i can say it did help performance with a few modern games that exceed 8GB such as Star Citizen, ARK, Witcher 3, PUBG, etc. So if you can chuck some in great! If not, you can always add more RAM later if you leave slots free on the Motherboard.
