Question Upgrading priorities

Hey,

So I want to upgrade and make it cost-effective in the sense of that I don't want to upgrade for ideally the next 5 years or more but I don't want to spend too much.
My budget would be around the £1000 mark (god knows what a £ is actually worth in $ anymore)
So to achieve my goals would it better to go for say a ryzen 5600x with an rtx 4070 OR a ryzen 7000 series with a less good GPU?
I'm open to taking nvidia/amd cards and intel/amd cpus so any advice is welcome.
I'm planning on making a completely new build except from storage since even my newest parts are about to be 5 years out of date and I can practically hear my gtx 960 beg for mercy.

I'm wanting to be able to play games like: Tarkov, Elden ring (late to the party), DayZ Standalone (modded), some modded Minecraft with shaders, Valorant and rocket league.

Thanks in advance

£1k doesn't go as far as it used to pre-covid, prices have gone somewhat nuts and yes, the £ isn't as strong as it once was.

Start with what you have and what's worth keeping. Personally, if you already have a decent Ryzen base, I'd stick with it, I'd not go for either the Zen4 or 40 series, both are excessively priced and would basically require either a brand new pc or a bigger budget.

No foreseeable reason why a 5800x/5900x with a 3080/Ti and some decent ram won't last at least 5 years.

AM5/40 series might be higher performance, but if you don't have the supporting equipment, like a 144Hz 4k monitor, then it's nothing but benchmark numbers as there'll be no visible difference on anything above refresh. 61fps or 500fps looks all the same on a 60Hz monitor.

hahaha yeah my rig is old so I just got new drives when necessary

Thanks for the suggestions. Just wondering why you've picked that PSU? Surly it has a fairly big redundancy on wattage and fully modular isn't really necessary

I'm running an 8600k and a gtx 960 so it's all really outdated. Also, a big reason for me wanting to fully upgrade is because of the possibility of China starting to enforce restrictions on Taiwan which could happen any day and that would cause the covid/crypto GPU prices to look cheap in comparison.
I'm thinking of spending a bit extra cash on the GPU since they seem to be outdated in 4 years ish when the gaming industry isn't in a graphical renaissance (which I would say it is right now), but if AMD/Intel are brining out some super desirable features then maybe I'd take new gen CPU with a new gen GPU.
