Hi,

I'm using a Sony Vaio laptop. The model number is VPCEH25EN. It has i3-2330M processor. Can I upgrade the processor to i5-2450M? My motherboard is Sony MBX 247 DA0HK1MB6E0, please tell if it will support i5 2450M processor.

How do I find out if " BIOS contains supporting microcode for the newer i5 CPU"?

If the information is published in a change log. But being I don't even see a BIOS update available, either there isn't one, or it's rolled in via VAIO updates (dedicated Sony app).

Honestly, your best answer would probably come from Sony if you call them. But don't expect much of an answer. In my experience VAIO's are built, shipped, and that's it. They have some of the WORST post-sales support of any laptop vendor. So with that said, I say "good luck"

Would I attempt a CPU upgrade on that laptop? Only if I was about to throw it away or sell it. It's a big risk your talking sans any additional documentation from Sony.

Basically if the laptop was available with the i5-2450M then it will probably work, BUT there were 2 versions of the processor you have, one was soldiered to the motherboard. If you have that, you aren't changing anything. I would take a close look at the CPU and see if its soldiered or not before continuing to worry about it.

from here it LOOKS like its the one with the removable processor

The CPU is definitely socketed and thus removable. And, both CPUs mentioned are Sandy Bridge with the same 35W TDP rating. So in all likelihood it should be a successful upgrade. But again, the only sicking point is the BIOS. Will it support it? Difficult to say.

There shouldn't be any harm in trying however. It will either work or it wont. If it doesn't, you can always put the i3 back in.

EDIT: E-bay lists the i5-2450M between $15 and $20 (not including shipping and tax).
