Hey thanks again for the help this forum gave me when I built my computer a few months back, I'm now planning on upgrading my RAM.

Current system (Mainly for gaming):

DS3 965P
E6600 @ 3.2GHz
Corsair 5400C4 (2x512MB) DDR2 @ 360MHz 1:1 4.4.4.12
X1900XT
Hyper 580W PSU
(anything else you need to know just ask)

So anyway I'm looking at getting one of these sets of RAM here:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-108-CS&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=813
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-124-CS&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=813

Whilst the technicalities state the same figures I realise these are both different calibers of memory by the same manufacturer - so is there much difference and if so what? (If you have any objection to the products I have chosen and have a better alternative do say)

Second Question - will I have to remove my old RAM or can I keep all 3GB worth in the computer? and if so would I need a bigger PSU?

Third and final question - Does it matter what slots I put the RAM in? I never thought about it at the time but a thread I just read seemed to suggest so - at the moment each module is filling slots 1 and 2.

EDIT - forgot to say, yes that RAM has been overclocked slightly using the Core 2 Duo guide - When I install the new RAM will they automatically be overclocked assumign I do not change my BIOS settings that overclocked the current RAM or should I reset the BIOS then re-overclock post installation?

Thanks in advance.

If you add 2 GB of PC6400 to your exiting PC5300 the RAM speed will default to the slower DIMMS. In addition, you could run into problems with your dual channel setup. I would suggest you do not mix the RAM you are suggesting. Both of your choices are Corsair XMS series. The choice is a matter of the timings and voltages between the two. They are both PC6400. Generally, put the DIMMS in the matching color coded slots for dual channel mode. I am not familiar with your MB. Not sure if slots 1 and 2 enable dual channel mode. Try downloading and installing CPUZ and check to see if you have dual channel operating correctly on your system.

No CPUz said single channel which was what got me thinking - well I'll read through the MB manual and see If I can dual channel them.

If I still decide to upgrade the RAM are there many places to sell it? I could try scamming a friend who knows less then me (have plenty of them 😛) but i'd feel bad.

Bought the RAM for about 100 new and not sure if I still have much packaging left, would OEM be easy to sell?

Regret not being more thoughtful as to what RAM I got when I built the setup - assumed it was an easy upgrade - i.e. buy more and thats it.

Thanks anyway

UPDATE - got my RAM dual channelled

Recall reading that part of the manual but it was poorly written and I didn't understand it's purpose so rammed in the RAM and moved onto the next step at the time.

Will see how things go with the dual channel over the next week otherwise I'll still consider the upgrade.

Thanks will bare that in mind next time I buy something. probably want upgrade as it seems more hassle then I thought it would be and am having to consider using my money for other thing s(i.e. a car at the moment).

By the way what makes them so bad? have used them before and nothing went wrong.

Basically, I ordered some RAM, it arrived dead, and it then took me a month to get a refund, during which I was charged £20 testing fees, etc. Only the threat of the Small Claims Court made them cough up. It's not too hard to find many stories like this on google....

And that RAM I linked went up from £97 to £111 today 🙁

Oh it's one of those companies where everything's fine until something shows up broken then they turn on you.

Thanks for the heads up on that.
