Hi there,

My sons would like to tether his Quest headset to his PC and play some PCVR games, however, it's showing that it's not meeting the minimum spec for the Oculus Rift.

I know the current processor is not enough, but wouldn't know where to start by getting a better one, then what motherboard etc.

I have run Speccy on it and attached the following:

Summary
Operating System: Windows 10 Home 64-bit
CPU: Intel Core i5 2500 @ 3.30GHz 43 °C Sandy Bridge 32nm Technology
RAM: 16.0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 666MHz (9-9-9-24)
Motherboard: MSI H61M-P31/W8 (MS-7788) (SOCKET 0) 37 °C
Graphics: 2047MB NVIDIA GeForce GT 710 (ASUStek Computer Inc) 47 °C
Storage: 931GB TOSHIBA DT01ACA100 (SATA ) 38 °C

I have added a PCI Express USB 3 card to the above spec.

The PC Specs for the Rift are here

Can anyone offer any advice as to what I can get away with upgrading or is it gonna be a new build?

Thanks in advance.

You'll at the very least need a RX580. A RTX2070 (NVIDIA), or 5700XT (AMD) would be preferred. A used 3770 might be a good upgrade IF your MB BIOS supports it. You'll also need to list your power supply (make and model) I would recommend a quality 500 Watt for RX580 and a quality 550+ Watts for 5700XT/RTX2070

Right now pricing is insane because of China pretty much shutting down. But with normal pricing this is what a full rebuild would look like:

PSU: 550 Watt $100
MB: B450 AM4 $80...(B550's will be about $180)
Memory: DDR4 3600 16 gigs C16, $110
CPU: AMD Ryzen 3600 $170
GPU: 5700XT $380

That's about $840-$940

Reuse Drive & Case & Keyboard & Mouse & Monitor.

Otherwise you are looking at a full rebuild.
