Hi,

Ik have a HP Elitebook8460p with a HP 161C motherboard,
And I would like to upgrade it with an SSD (Of about 1TB).

Now I would like to know which SSD-types are compatible with my computer.
And / or what else I should watch when purchasing one.

At this moment the laptop has an
WDC WD5000BPKT-60PK4T0 ATA Device hard drive.

Specy says the following :

Storage
465GB Western Digital WDC WD5000BPKT-60PK4T0 ATA Device (SATA )
3GB JMCR SD SCSI Disk Device (NULL )

Flash drives
JMCR SD SCSI Disk Device
Interface NULL
Capacity 3,69 GB
Real size 3.963.617.280 bytes
RAID Type None
S.M.A.R.T
S.M.A.R.T not supported
Partition 0

Partition ID Disk #1, Partition #0
Disk Letter F:
File System FAT32
Volume Serial Number 170F054C
Size 3,68 GB
Used Space 1,75 GB (47%)
Free Space 1,93 GB (53%)

Anyway I would like to be sure that I buy the right one.
As I understood there are 4 types (?):
2,5 inch , mSATA , M.2 , PCIe.

From what I have understood the 2,5 inch is the most likely to be compatible but also the slowest of the four. So if any of the others are compatible it would probably be preferable.

Anyway, tnx in advance for helping

Well am not an HP salesman, just an hobbyist, so what I'd do is the check out the manual, if there is an M.2 slot, you are all set, other wise you are getting a SATA SSD, may need a caddy for proper mounting.
Specs say a Q67 chipset and a 2xxx series CPU. Pretty sure that is too old.

Youtube is great, since there is a video for most laptop upgrades --

I would stick with a 2.5in drive. It will be the simplest and probably the only option. Your laptop is too old to support M.2.
Get an MX500 1TB disk -- https://www.newegg.com/crucial-mx500-1tb/p/N82E16820156174 around $100 ...

Hi Thanks for your answer,

I Watched the youtube video, pretty usefull

But just as a follow up:

Do you think it will be well worth it, upgrading it into an SSD?
Or might it aswell be better to get a new motherboard ?

Because from what I have seen, for $100 you can get an M.2 2.200MB/s.
Compared to the 560 of an 2.5 inch drive.

The other components include a

Intel Core i7 2620M
and 16gb DDR3L.

Generally speaking, my processor and memory seem fine, but if I invest $100 in a new hard disk it better be worth it.

Because I'd rather invest $250 for something good, then $100 for something mediocre.

Laptops you generally have to replace the entire unit. They are not simple motherboard replacements. If you are happy with the rest of the performance of the laptop, then I wouldn't stress over "there is something better out there". Get the 2.5in SSD and if you don't have it already, a USB adapter that will allow you to clone to the new drive.

Okay thanks a lot for helping me out. I think I got it,
But just to be sure...
the SSD upgrade will make a pretty significant change and is well worth it (?) :) .
