Upgrading the cpu, do I have to change the motherboard?

Can I change the cpu with another one that use the same socket and chipset without changing the motherboard? Is that preferable or is it better to change the motherbord as well?

As long as the cpu has the same socket type the only reason why you would need to change motherboards is if you are not happy with the quality of it.
