Hello guys
im new to this forums i hope im posting in the right section >..<

as the title says im planning to upgrade to a gtx 1070

i currently have hd 6970 sapphire which as an ancient gpu that i had for almost 5 years and its time to change it but im really on a tight budget i cant spend more than 400$ so changing mobo / cpu is not an option for me

i using
8gb ram running at around 1600mhz
i5 2500 non k that i overclocked to around 4.2ghz which im afraid it will bottleneck a card like the gtx 1070
im not sure if its really running at 4.2 becouse the guide i followed to overclock the non k says it cant goes more than 3.9 ghz
here is a pic of my results

my motherboard has only pci 2.0 only also >.........<

would it be better for me buying a used gtx 970 when price drop or waiting for the gtx 1060/1070

any help would be appreciated :)

Solution
You might experience some bottlenecking in more CPU-intensive games with everthing maxed - it all depnds on how stable your overclock is - or not.

If it can really hold 4.2GHz then that puts it near-ish the level of a stock i5-4690 @ 3.50GHz, so it's not a bad CPU for another year or two.

Given that you are budget conscious, you will certainly be okay at 1080p 60 fps with a used GTX 970 for a good while yet. I too have noticed how cheap they are becoming (230€ in my country already). Looking at building a similar performing rig for a friend so I'm watching prices atm on GTX 970's.

The GTX 1070 is a fine looking thing for sure. I won't say it's total overkill for 1080p 60fps, as in time, the requirements for games only ever goes up...

Hi thx for thr reply

To get the most out of it at 1080p Ultra 60 fps (without any frame-drops) you need a GTX 970 - a 960 or 380X does not have enough power. But you might be able to get away with something cheaper than a GTX 1070 nevertheless for your needs atm.

Overall, I think it is worth holding on a little longer to see what AMD puts out next month. There is the possibility of an R9 480X being able to easily match your requirements for quite a few $'s less than your budget. Plus they are supposed to be very power efficient.

We won't know if it's worth going one way or the other until we see benchmarks of course, but I would certainly wait and see.

Solution
I have had a GTX 970 for about a year now and only just switched from Haswell i5 to Devil's Canyon i7 (i5 couldn't handle Witcher 3 and Fallout 4) and I see no reason at all to switch to the GTX 1000 series card as I will be staying with 1080p 60fp for the foreseeable future as I'm happy with it. Also means my card will be able to play future games as new games at 1440p will need a GTX 1000.

The new GTX 1000's are not worth it if your sticking to a 1080p display as the GTX 1000 cards are the 1440p high-ultra sweet spot now.

Thx for the help 😀

i guess i will wait for some time

as for my cpu max speed is 4.2ghz
at average is 4.0-4.1ghz
and at minimum of 3.9 when all 4 cores at 100% usage only noticed it while running cpu stress tests on normal daily use / gaming its around 4 - 4.1

Well when I came such as Witcher 3 and Fallout 4 I get like 40-60% usage on my CPU which is an i7 4790K which has 8 threads, the usages vary between cores constantly and the GPU is 70-80% usage at high ultra 1080p 60fps constant.

My opinion is that if someone has a 1080p screen they don't need the new cards for another 1-2yrs and by then the price would of dropped a bit, the 3rd party GPU's will be a lot cheaper than the GeForce ones certainly. I will be going for the MSI GTX 1070-80 8GB as I love my MSI GTX 970 (so cool, quiet and powerful)
