I'm wondering if I should upgrade from an i3 6100 to i3 8100. They have a mobo and cpu combo at micro center for $135 but I don't know if it's worth it. My current pc has 8gb of ddr4 ram, gtx 1060 3gb

Solution

I'd look into the i5-8xxx instead of another i3.
But the i3-8100 will be "better" than your current one.
How much would a used i7 6xxx series CPU cost you? I'd hesitate to advise a jump from 2 cores/2 threads to 4 cores/4 threads when many games already can use more than 4 threads.

Which brings us to the games you play. If you play quad core CPU demanding games, yes a move to the i5 will be worth it. If you play games that aren't using your current CPU to 100% usage, then the i5 probably won't make as big a difference as you hope. If you play, or intend on playing, the newest and most demanding games then the i5 is not enough.

I see what you're saying, but I'm not into pc gaming that heavily and don't want to spend that much.

In what way is the current system not meeting your needs?

On some newer games, I get low fps even on low settings and I'm pretty sure it's not the graphics card. plus, the i3 6100 is only a dual core and getting a quad core would be beneficial I believe, just needed someone with more knowledge to help me out

OK then, yeah.
Time for an upgrade.

For around the same price do you think this upgrade is worth it?
