[SOLVED] Upgrading to q9650

Hi,
I was wondering if I can upgrade my old Mobo to core 2 quad q9650. I'm using ASRock G41m-VS2, with e5200, GT430, and ddr2 4gb ram.
I know I'm using an old Mobo but if you can help me, I will be thankful for you.

Yep, you can run almost anything lga775. Depending on the OS, you may even want to spring for a faster dual core like the e8600 as the single thread performance is even bettter than the q9650:

I have some e8600 systems and an q9550 and the e8600 feels a lot quicker until there's multiple tasks going on. You can also upgrade the gpu to something faster like a gtx 770 and really wake up the whole system:

BTW I was thinking about upgrading to GTX 750 ti, just because it consumes less power than the GTX 770. And tell me if I can overclock the q9650.
That's not necessary, but it will be cool.

You should be able to overclock, not sure that you should though. Fairly basic board with no heatsinks on the VRMs.

The only move that will help you with power and will actually improve performance is to move to a gtx 970:

I wouldn't mess with overclocking the q9650 until you're maxing out your gpu. Then at some point you'll be as fast as you can go and can take the pug to a newer and faster platform.

What programs run faster on a dual core E8600 vs a Q9650?

If I'm doing any single task on my xp systems, the my e8600 ones are definitely faster than my q9650 ones.

As soon as you add another task though that all changes though and the quad shows its strength.

Still, for something that is a singular task (like a game), the e8600 is as fast as I've been able to find on the 775 platform in stock form.

Can it run the q9650 with GTX 970, or I need to change my psu?
I've tried the power supply calculator and it says that I need at least a 500watt power supply.

go with the dirt cheap xeon e5450 it better than q9650
you will need to mod the bios
and go for gtx 1050 or 750 ti dont go with gtx 970 it will be very huge waste because the cpu will bottleneck with the gpu

I think you might be okay depending on how hard you're going to push the 970, which I don't think will be near 100% so it's power usage won't hit 100%. I would try the cpu upgrade first and then the gpu. If you have problems with heat out of the power supply or rebooting or other issues when you add in the gpu, then you will need to upgrade. And an upgrade to 500w is pretty cheap, so if you just want to go ahead and do it you can do that too.
