Upgrading to SSD and to Windows 8.1

I'm thinking about upgrading my system with an SSD as well as changing my OS to 8.1 from 7. I currently am using a WD Black HDD as my boot and storage. When I install an SSD and Windows 8.1 onto the SSD, will all my stuff on the HDD still be there as I will still be using that as my primary storage, or will I need to back-up my HDD and then reinstall all my programs back onto it.

Great choice on the upgrade!
However, it's recommended to backup the data from the WD Black somewhere else, re-format it and reinstall all your programs and applications. Moreover, you will be changing the OS versions so I think it's necessary to perform this.
