i just recently changed my laptop termal paste and notice i can swap cpu's, so i can wondering can my laptop handle a i3 cpu

My cpu: Intel celeron 900 2.2ghz

I think that the PGA478 socket has been a dead letter for a long time. Different generations of processors tend to have different sockets and different motherboard chipsets that are incompatible. The Core 2 Duo is probably the most recent processor for that socket.

To use that processor i need OS 64bit and from my researching i need 4gb ram and greater to use that os but my laptop is only 4gb memory max but wont i need like alot of ram for like games. Games i play is gta san andreas online and crossfire ok should i keep my processor and just upgrade my ram and ssd to get like new fast laptop?

When i say support it, it means i am not sure if it will work at all.
Upgrading laptop cpu's is always an iffy affair, because they are sometimes purpose built for the cpu that they use.

The processors which sunder25 has listed as compatible are incorrect, sorry sunder. Your motherboard cannot run CPUs with a FSB of 1066. The Intel Celeron 900 (your current processor) is the default processor for many laptops, which runs on Socket P and supports a maximum of 800MHz FSB. How do I know? I just upgraded one yesterday, after researching for weeks.

You can run any CPU you can find in your motherboard, as long as it's on Socket P and is at 800MHz FSB. What I would recommend is the Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 @ 2.5GHz; unfortunately there is no Core 2 Quad with an 800MHz FSB. Your chipset for your motherboard is also most likely a GL40, please correct me if I'm wrong (you can find out using CPU-ID).

All the best.
