Upgrading Vista along with motherboard

Hello community!

Later this week I am going to be doing major upgrades to my rig, including motherboard/CPU and OS.

I currently am running Vista OEM, will upgrade to 7, and I plan on keeping my current hard drive.

I am curious what I need to do to make sure this goes as smooth as possible. I'm also wondering if all the files, programs, and games I have will all be accessible after.

Really there is no budget but I'm trying to think about convenience vs value. Another thought I had was to set up an SSD to install the OS and drivers, then connecting the old hard drive. Even then though I'm not sure what programs would work on the new OS and what I'd have to reinstall.

I already purchased 4670k and asrock z87 extreme6. Just waiting for my case to come in the mail and its build time.
