but when I try to upgrade to a later version I download the upgrade ok it verifies it ok it starts to get it ready and then the system reboots ok and start to install it says working with updates but when the progress gets to 26% the complete system freezes has any one else had this problem

yes a fresh install will work as long as you get the updated install disk
Have you got two dvdrw drives installed on your system if so try either disconnecting one of them while you update which worked for me or reconfigure the order they are on the motherboard I tried with success boot drive SATA0 documents drive SATA1 DVD 1 SATA2 DVD2 SATA3 and bingo

Interesting. I don't have multiple blu ray drives, but I have an SSD as boot and 4 other drives. That could be it.
