I have a mid tower on hand and I'm looking to upgrade my CPU which will need a new mobo. I've noticed micro ATX mobos are significantly cheaper. Would it be a problem if I have all the space for the components on a micro ATX mobo? What's the downside of converting to a micro ATX mobo? I don't really care that my tower is bulky.

Solution
A ATX motherboard has 7 expansion slots.
A MATX motherboard has 4.
How many slots do you plan to use past the pcie graphics slot??
Because of fewer components, a MATX size can be made for less, and sells for less.
If the board has decent vrm cooling and the features you want, why not?
Make and model of your case?

Besides the obvious, of a small board in a large case, that's a relative question. Some boards tend to lose out on USB ports, PCIe slots and even VRM componentry.

What sort of a platform are you migrating to, what sort of a motherboard have you narrowed down to and what are you looking from your motherboard purchase?
