Hi,

I'm thinking of upgrading my PC and have few questions. Currently I have i5-4670 3.4 GHz, motherboard MSI MS-7850 and graphic card nvidia GTX 1060 6GB. I use my PC purely for gaming with some light programming. I have 2 monitors 1920x1080 60hz (only use 1 for gaming). My old graphic card died so this one isn't that old and since it is good, I wont replace it for now. But I am thinking of getting new motherboard, cpu, psu and case. I don't intent to OC cpu or gpu. What do you think about bottom specs? I'm looking for something that will last me for few years without breaking or underperforming.

-i5-8400 2.8 GHz (non k) (219€)
-motherboard asus prime H370-plus (117€)
-psu Antec ATX EarthWatts Gold pro 750 (wanted to buy 650 one but they don't have it on stock atm) (105€)
-and case Phanteks Eclipse P400 ATX (89€)

All those cost about 530€ and my buddget is around 550€ (extra 50, so total of 600€ of it is worth). Is this set up fine or should I make changes? For cpu, I have read that i5-8400 is really good for gaming, but is the non k, no OCing good? Also, isn't 2.8 GHz bit low (I'm not that fimiliar with hardware, so I don't know)? Is that mother ok or should I get different one? For case, I don't care for RGB lighting, but I want one that has psu at the bottom, good cooling and good dust filtering (I get a lot of dust in and on my case).

Also, I don't want to get new harddrives. Currently I have 128 GB SSD for windows and main programs and 2TB SATA for all my files. If I change it to new motherboard, will it mess with windows? Do I need to formati it and reinstall windows? What about my files on SATA? Will they be currupt or work normaly (I'm guessing I will have to reinstall my games, but what about safe files, movies, docs,....)?

Thank you for the answers.

  1. where are you located (country) because price vary quite a bit depending where your located.
  2. yes you will need DDR4 ram your DDR3 ram will not work in new system
  3. have you considered a Ryzen System ?

2 suggestions for you including ram... first Intel then Ryzen

For windows, do I install them like I would if I wanted to format the and do fresh install? And my SATA disk (that doesn't have windows on it) stays just fine, right?
For cpu, that boost is automatic? I want to use stock cooler with no OC on cpu.

For ram would 2x8gb be nice. For speed would 2666mhz<->3200mhz be nice. The faster the better, but do keep an eye on cost of ram. Must say that 3200 often is already pretty cheap, but don't get 3200mhz with a cas latency of lets say 18 or 19.

For windows would a a truly fresh install on a formatted disk. Just make a good back up of all data you want to keep, then when installing windows clear the disk used of all partitions and let windows create a new one.

yes the Intel has a better single thread but the Ryzen 5 2600 even without an overclock on it is a faster processor

Since I have windows on SSD, my files on SATA disk will remain unchanged?
Edit: Also, what do you think about Kigston DDR4 DIMM 8Gb PC 3000 HX Predator XMP 3000 MHz CL15 ? it comes with just 1x8, so I will need to buy 2 of them.

I have looked at ryzen, but I still prefer intel.
For motherboard, what is the difference between asus prime h370 and msi H370?

Yes,just detache the sata disk (guess hdd) from the motherboard before when installing windows, when done reatach.

That is fine ram,but sticks come in sets for a reason, these kits are tested to work together. Doesn't mean the single sticks won't,but it can happen they won't play together (can be 50/50) so best would be to get a kit of 2.

Brand and maybe some features like one heaving more fan headers or different soundchip or different internet chip.
