Hello, I recently upgraded from 2GB of RAM to 4GB ram, but noticed my 32bit Operating system limited it to 3GB, and claims the 1GB remaining is used by the bios for the hardware drivers.

I think its useless, that could not help at all.
So I decided to upgrade to 64bit version of windows, but before I start the process. there is something that bothers me, application compatibility and people say that it will wipe out all of my data that I have on my disc.

I don't have any external storage drive, but I only can create a partition on my current drive.
Is it safe to make a partition and store the backup image there?

Congratulations and enjoy.

They are correct, if you plan on moving from 32-bit to 64-bit, then you will be required to format the system drive and install the new 64-bit OS. Upon installing any flavour of Windows 7 and 8, there are two partitions created: the hidden partition and the system partition.

How large is your image file?

I don't yet created any, but I will make a partition about 160gb to move some data that I need.

Applications would need to be reinstalled to run under the 64bit OS. Your data files, game saves, emails, pictures, music, movies, favorites, and such... can all be stored onto the new partition.

it seems like you have a good grasp of this already. I just wanted to be clear for others who might be looking to make the same move.

Good idea.
