Hello to All DIY,

Got this UPS BNT-1200AP by Powercom.

First time plug in to power: In background I relay can be heard or some kind of switching unit.

When power button is pressed short , beeps short, LED that indicates AC on switch ON and then after 2 sec OFF again.

When power button is pressed long (longer then 3 sec), double beep AC try again to stay on but shuts down in same manner as above.

After just 1 hour in that position, replugged the AC cord to try again and there was nothing this time. No sounds of switching circuits. Nothing. Appears dead.

Also tried following: Using power from antoher outlet. No change.
Checked batteries inside: Very low on voltage, multimeter said 2,3V on one and 6,5 on the other.
There was a lot of green stuff on + connector. These batteries in serial connection inside UPS.

What could gone wrong here and is there a way to fix it?

Thanx a lot guys, :)

Solution
The batteries in your system seem to be series. Series batteries have the same AH capacity(7 from your image), but 2 x the voltage(at least in your case because it is 2 of them).

It looks like your UPS uses 24 volts(closer to 27-28 when full charged.). When I tested with car batteries It was only to ensure the UPS was functioning(I then ordered the proper batteries for it). I connected and fired it up. I did not even use mains power instead I cold started the unit and ran a light for a while to test it.

I am not sure if using a car battery would work on a UPS long term. Even larger SLA/AGM batteries may be an issue if the UPS runs long enough to get too hot. Some units can keep cool(many have an active fan), while others would...
Those batteries seem to be toast at that low of a voltage.

How old are the batteries? They normally have a 3-5 year service life(APC says this at least)

Check to ensure none of the fuses are blown as well.

Take great care poking around in a UPS because it can have at least full mains voltage when on batteries.

If you have not tried, maybe leave it on charge(plugged in and off) over night to see what it does. This is in case the batteries are just dead(too low of a voltage)

I found a label on batteries thats says replaced at 20.10.2012.

Two fixed fuses on MB of 30 AMPS NOT BLOWN.

One glass clinder fuse jest after the main AC power plug in is OK too.

I ll try that one, leaving those batteries plugged in for the night.

Hope it is just that, but I have never seen series batteries have one that much power without it being shot(needing to be replaced).

I have a ups with parallel batteries and it did something similar(by the time it was noticed both batteries required replacing[a good idea anyway since both batteries has been in for at least 6 years.].).

I did once test a UPS with 2 x 12 volt car batteries to ensure it worked before replacing the batteries.

That was just about I was gonna ask u if its OK to try.

So I wanna use tis UPS to power on 24/7 one PC and modem used for IP and regular line phones.

Considering the fact combined these two batteries have capacity in total around 15AH, and they operate at 12V, is it safe for me to connect one CAR baterry at that place with op voltage 12V and capacity aprox. 50 AH to this end and to hope nothing will burn and no mess will be done.

As I see it, the UPS will try to charge it up to its limit, but when POWER LOSS happens, the other way is worriying me, when all that capacity rush for the transformer and to the rest of electronics.

Please advise....

Some units can keep cool(many have an active fan), while others would overheat if they could run longer than the standard battery allows. I have never tried to charge a car battery with a UPS and can not say if it is a good or bad idea.

In general larger batteries are not the issue(assuming the charger is upto the task). A ups only draws what it is designed to(and this is related to the load it is under) and if it does try to pull too much the fuse will blow(those 2 plastic ones I think).

Ooo yes, I forgot that crucial stuff just for a second, that in serial connection Voltage is added and current is the same for no metter how many will be connected together.

Can I proceed with same test as u did, for cold start, using two car batteries in serial connection stack so I can know for sure the UPS ok and just down becouse of these batteries or just use some kind of AC/DC adapter or DC Generator to provide 24V needed for the UPS to start, just for a short time?

All in all at the end I would have to go and buy two new batteries 12V and 7AH cap.

Ok will do, and also post the results for others with same problem.

Thanx for your time so far....
