I am almost nearing completion of my gaming rig YAY! However, here in my area power is not very stable and constantly goes out (especially during thunder storms).

Specs:
Motherboard: ASUS M5A99FX Pro R.20
CPU: AMD FX-8370 (Want to overclock to at least 4.5)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO (Push-Pull)
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 16GB (2x8) 1600Mhz
GPU: Sapphire Dual-X R9 280X (x1)
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 2TB 7200RPM
Fan Controller: NZXT Sentry 3
Fans: 1x Corsair AF120 (White LED) 4x Corsair AF140 (White LED)
Case: Corsair Carbide 330R
Blu-Ray Drive: Pioneer BDR-209DBK
Wi-Fi: ASUS PCE-AC68
PSU: Corsair HX1000i

I got that PSU just in case I add another GPU in the future and CrossFire or add more HDDS and to have space to grow (I don't want to be upgrading my rig and then need to buy a more powerful PSU) I know its a 1000 Watt one so I'm guessing I need to buy a UPS that big. I will be plugging in the monitor and speakers and all that good stuff to it too. I don't need runtime, I just want to have time to turn off my computer safely so nothing gets corrupted or damaged (stuff was pretty expensive, still waiting for the parts to get here so I can install them). I'm guessing I would need a UPS that can hold at least 1500 Watts or more. (I just hope it's not that hard on my wallet)

I've owned APC in the past and I've been really happy with their products. I would prefer for the UPS to be APC but I can try another brand (as long as it is reliable and high quality). Do you now if I'm gonna have to get a UPS that produces a pure sine wave while on battery? I know the SMART-UPS line does but it's PRETTY expensive...... What do you think? Which UPS would you get? Would you get a UPS at all? Do gamers usually have a UPS for their rigs?

Is having a UPS necessary / recommended?
Do you have a UPS for your gaming rig or anything else?

Thanks!

no need the thing is that depending on how small the ups is it might not be able to hold your system on for much time if the ups is small if its bigger it might be able to hold your system for longer in power outages or blackouts anyways maybe a 850w ups could help you hold for a while (about an hour or more depending on your system power draw since i doubt your 1000w psu is being pushed still the bigger its the more components and time will it supply energy to your things

Look for a cyberpower ups they are pretty good as are apc. If you lose power most likely you wont be near maximum power draw at the time. I have an apc500
that keeps my system on for as long as I need to shut it down. If your just hanging out on toms ot internet you system is probably mot drawing more that 100 watts plus or minus 10 from the wall when I am gaming during heavy vid scenes I am just about at 300watts of draw plus or minus 20 watts.
Even with a sli set up with newer cards you probably wont continually draw over 400watts
So a 650watt to 700watt ups should be fine if you need a longer period of time you could go for a higher wattage ups

In Corsair's own forums the Corsair reps have been recommending using only a pure sine wave UPS with the HX1000i because of the UPS warnings and system instability encountered during their own testing and customers feedback when using a stepped approximation to a sine wave UPS.

Do you want a UPS that won't give you problems or do you want one that doesn't work properly?

They are more expensive because they require more expensive technology.

I have the CP1500PFCLCD [from Cyberpower] and I absolutely love it. I also like the software that comes with it, which allows me to schedule boot up/shutdown times.
