I have two "clusters" of computers. One consists of a W10 box running a Sandy Bridge i7-2600K w/32GB ram, one is a Mac Pro 3.1 running Catalina with 32GB, and the last is a Mini M1 running Big Sur with the stock minimal configuration. The other cluster has different arrangements, 3 W10 and 2 macs. This question is about Cluster 1. But I am presuming that a resolution could apply to Cluster 2 as well.

California is going to be hit with many "small" power outages this summer., We've already had 3-4 in the last several weeks (as determined by the clock on the stove loosing several hours from time to time).

I've bought 2 x 1500 KVA UPS from Amazon, one an APC and one an Amazon Basics. The APC is going to run Cluster one. With battery ports hopefully powering all 3 boxes although only one will be "doing anything" until a shutdown command is issued.

I have seen where it is possible to use an "early warning" feature of the UPS to signal the host computer that shut down is imminent and that that 'puter can be shut down "legally" before being forced to. I have not yet investigated software to do this. But as understand, the "shutdown coming" signal from the UPS reaches the 'puter via a USB signal.

I am wondering how this USB signal can be transmitted to a pair of other 'puters, both macs. that might be running (assuming these have software that can receive and act on such a signal).

My thought was to use a powered USB hub with the signal from the UPS fed into the USB B port and then propagated out via the USB A ports. Would something like this lashup work as imagined?

Leaving the larger question, "would software be available to turn off the W10 and Mac OD clients" unanswered for now

My "objective" is not to keep the 'puters running when PG&E "burps" but to avoid system damage that would make it difficult to restart.

What think you?

Yes. You can initiate graceful, unattended shutdowns. However details matter.

You will need the applicable software to send the shutdown commands to the systems be served and protected by the UPS.

I think the third link will be the most useful as a starting point for planning out what is needed for your requirements.

Do take a look at the Brochures...

Do take a look at the Brochures, User Guides, and FAQs - read all carefully - especially the User Guide.

And, the power situation also demands a good backup plan. Be sure that all important data is backed up at least 2 x and stored off of the original systems. Ensure that the backups are proven recoverable and readable.

Just in case Mr. Murphy shows up.
