I reformat old computers to lightweight linux distros. There are two laptops I own that I want to give a memory upgrade:

Toshiba Satellite A100:
1.73GHz Celeron M processor
1GB RAM
On - board Graphics
Lubuntu

Acer 3100 (Just received computer for myself), not very familiar with Hardware yet):

AMD 1.6GHz Processor: Sempron M.
1GB RAM
AMD Radeon Graphics (Think it is a proper card, but not yet for sure)
Ubuntu, but with the LXDE desktop.

They are both laptops, and have two memory slots with 512 MB RAM in them.

I have a dialemma.

The Acer 1300 has a slower processor but same RAM as the A100, but A100 has a faster processor and same RAM.

Acer 1300 has a few lag spikes on Ubuntu, it looks like the processor needs more headroom, so should I upgrade the Ram on 1300, or upgrade A100 as it is used more?

A100 runs perfectly. Maplin sells 1GB laptop ram for £20, so one of the computers will have 1.5GB RAM.

Which one should I upgrade?

Thanks,

UPDATE:

The computers are each 5 years old and ram in them has not been changed.

Then I will upgrade the 1300, sorted that then.

I also have another problem,
would the other stick of RAM in the 1300 (512 MB) fill up before the 1GB one, and crash the system?

As I am still at school, and both systems have Firefox, I use both, generally for work. The reason why I have two is that I am more familiar with Lubuntu and the Terminal there than Ubuntu. I use the terminal on A100 a lot, and isn't that more RAM friendly?

The 1300 - I use that for Word Processing and Presentations, more for school work I suppose.

Thanks, I will try anyway and see if that works. I will report on that soon.
