Hey, I formatted and installed windows xp onto my co-workers Dell Dimension 4600 desktop. This thing has been a drivers nightmare!

Took for ever to get the correct Video driver, since the Video driver from the website did not work. I had to get the serial number off of the Video card, and download directly from nvidia.

Anyways, The sound was working for me, tho I was using Headphones, since my main rig uses hdmi.

She brought it home, and the computer now plays all the sound in a very low and muffled sound. She has the volume all the way up, and am currently running Team-viewer with her, since I really don't wanna go to her house... she talks to much.

I uninstalled the old driver. I am trying to find the correct driver but none of the drivers from the dell website work, they keep coming up saying that the hardware is not found.

She is using a chip set for audio. Any ideas?

"Hardware not found" means you are trying to install the wrong driver. Only DELL have the correct drivers for DELL machines my friend, but you must take care to use the correct DELL website for the country that the laptop was designed for.

You also need to enter the laptop's SERVICE TAG rather than selecting a model number as this ensures you are offered only the correct drivers for that specific laptop - the service tag tells them exactly what components are in it. This is important because two identical models could have different hardware inside them depending on what stocks of required components were available at the time.

The Service Tag takes account of that.

Unfortunatly all the video drivers on the website did not work, forced me to use nvidia website which that worked.

I uninstalled the chipset drivers, than reinstalled them, and reinstalled the driver SoundMax, which, made the sound much better at first, louder, but still a lil muffled and not quite good enough.

After uninstalling K-Lite codec pack, the sound reverted to sht again.

Her service code is CRXH451

which is funny since they don't post any audio drivers for her machine. Im gonna try running the Driver reset tool, after reinstalling the SoundMax Driver again, Im certain its the correct driver, theres just some sort of conflict with the driver, thats causing this.

The weird part is, when I used my Senheiser Headset, the sound was perfect for me, no problems at all. She takes it home, and used Dell desktop speakers, sht quality, I told her try headphones, and same problem.
