Hey all,

My desktop has been becoming slower and slower lately.
I started looking at PC parts too late this year and am hence rushing to complete a new build. Any help I could get would be great!!!

TL;DR
i7-4790k or i7-5820k, with X99, Haswell E etc? Is it worth the upgrade or not?
Which GPU?
Other component questions

Budget:
Well, anywhere between ~$1,000 - $2,000 would be cool, $2,500 would be stretching it. However, I'd rather save money than go for the most uber components. I simply want a great desktop, relatively future proofed.

I current have:

GIGABYTE GA-P67A-UD4-B3
Intel Core i5-2500K 3.3GHz Quad Core
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 2x8GB DDR3 1600
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 2x4GB DDR3 1600 (Some weird reason when I put both in, I get only 1333Mhz). Im using 20GB total right now (Stupid ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro Rev.2 92mm Cooler blocks one slot)
OCZ Fatal1ty 650W (IIRC)
COOLER MASTER Storm Scout case
SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 6850
ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro Rev.2
SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 1TB 7200 (Primary). I will be changing this with the Samsung 840 EVO 1TB (which I already have). I also attach 4 secondary drives and external HDDs.
3 x ASUS 24" Monitor
Logitech Z906 5.1 Speakers
Razer Blackwidow, Razer Mamba, Madcatz MOUS 9, Logitech MX 518, Microsoft Arctouch etc.

Usage:

My main usage is gaming and very heaving multitasking. What I mean by that, is that I generally have 30-100 Chrome tabs open, am running Steam, Battle.Net, Twitch streams, LoL etc, multiple VLC HD videos at the same time.

My normal CPU usage is 20-30% and RAM usage is generally between 8-12GB. If I open over 50 tabs, than RAM usage goes into the 12-16GB Range and I have close it to play anything.

Another massive pain point for me is my motherboard + case:
1. The SATA slots are horizontal and not vertical. This makes it a mega pain to add and remove sata cables, because there is 2cm of space between that and the HDD enclosure.
2. Because I have 4 drives (and now 5 with a SSD) + DVD ROM drive, my case is completely full, and its hard to even attach / detach one HDD.

Boot issues:
I cant really use AHCI and dont have UEFI. The initial check takes about 15-20 secs, and by the time i load into windows with all processes up and running, its a good 5-7 minutes.
Since i dont have my SSD installed yet, my disk usage maxes out very easily, its normally at 20-40%, a simple copy paste or doing 2-3 things at once freezes my computer.

Why I want a new Desktop:
Good time to change, since I want a new beast to play with. Want something that multitasks really really well.

Basic Config:
This is pretty much picked out of last months Maximum PC Article.
5820 build:
http://pcpartpicker.com/user/GeeksMirage/saved/H4wCmG
4790 build:
http://pcpartpicker.com/user/GeeksMirage/saved/8fjqqs

I dont need any peripherals / HDDs / Monitors. I'm totally set there.

Main Question

1. CPU
i7-4790k or i7-5820k?

Fyi, Ive already seen these awesome videos:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQ59vHSFfZA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GgDZKGA89I

I dont do video editing, so the 5820k may be overkill, since I see that most processes / games dont use more than 2 cores?
But then I max out my RAM (32GB) on the LGA 1155 boards, so I would need to upgrade again in a few years.

This is the main decision to take. Because after this, the motherboard and RAM completely depends on this. (And the price changes as well.)

2. CPU Cooler: NZXT Kraken X61 106.1 or CORSAIR Hydro Series H100i Extreme Performance ? Any other recommendations?
I've never liquid cooled before, always wanted to. So which ones should I be using?

3. Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD5H or Gigabyte GA-X99-UD4 ATX LGA2011-3

4. Memory: Corsair Vengeance Pro 32GB (4 x 8GB) DDR3-2133 or Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB (4 x 8GB) DDR4-2666

Any difference between the Pro or LPX? Seems the same to me, i dont really overclock.
How about G Skill (however, not the tall ones, dont want another height issue). Or any other brands?

5. Video Card:
I have no clue about what to get here. I want to get 2, mainly because I want the extra display ports. I have 3 monitors right now (2xDVI + DP). Hence, I cannot connect 4 outputs (e.g. for my TV). Also, its always good to future proof if one wants more monitors :p

I dont play high res games on the PC, I played a bit of dragon age, titanfall etc. But I mostly play that on the PS4 is need be. I dont have to have it run on AA 16 etc, but would be good to have mostly high settings.

Maximum PC recommended a GTX 980, I chose 970 coz I can get 2 of them, for just a $100 more.

Also, which brand? Are EVGA, Zotac, Gigabyte (for GFX cards, not mobos) etc good brands? Ive generally only bought XFX, Sapphire etc.

Do I need a bridge or anything for SLI?

6. Case: Corsair 750D or Corsair 780T ATX ?
Im leaning towards the latter. Any other great cases? The square box ones? I definitely want a full tower, the mid tower gives me no space at all.

7. PSU: Enermax REVOLUTION X't 730W
Any other recommendations? IMO, 730 may not be enough, maybe I should go for 850 or 1000? Remember, 3 monitors, 5+2 external HDDs etc.

8. Optical Drive: LG WH16NS40
Dont really care, rarely use it. May either not get it, or just get a cheap DVD writer.

9. Other stuff:
3x Monitor Mount, case mods (leds etc)
Any recos?

Thats the end! Thanks for reading through, would love ANY advice which you may have.

No, No and No.
I dont have any preference, as mentioned, these were the recommended brands on Maximum PC.
Any suggestions are welcome.

I dont really overlock, though am planning to do so to get more power. If a stock (non overclock) part is better, please do suggest that.

Very interesting. Couple of questions.

Why the Xeon E3 vs the 4790k / 5820k ?
It seems that the 4790k is better in most respects than the E3.

Cooler: Why the noctua vs the Kraken or H100i ?
I dont need the HDDs, I can swap in more RAM instead of that and save more $$.
Why the Asus 970s? Any particular reason for Asus instead of Sapphire etc ?
PSU: Have no clue if EVGA is the best for PSUs? Thoughts?

Ah, understood. And thanks for the config!
For me, its a little less about the budget and more about getting a bit more for my money.
I get that its a 5% diff in performance. But could that be true only for today?
Given 2 years later, when we have apps using more cores, I will start maxing out my 4790 (as I max out my 2500k, which worked great 2 years ago).
Thats what Im wondering about.

The issue with the 980 is that I wind up spending another $300 for SLI. And that starts getting me out of my budget range :p
Coz im putting the cards in SLI not for their power, but for their ports.
