Hello! Thank you for looking over my problem.:)

Main Issue

When I turn on my pc, the fans start up fast, then die down to about half speed and eventually shut off along with the entire system. There are no beeps or any display.

My System

Merc Alpha case
Gigabyte f2a55m hd2
AMD a4 5300
WD 500 GB HDD
x2 4GB G Skill Ripjaw RAM
Antec 450W PSU

What I have tried:

Overlooked and tested various tips on the thread concerning boot up issues found on these forums
Another PSU
Another Motherboard
Single stick of ram/ no ram
Resetting cmos/taking battery out for a period of time

What Happened

This is my first pc that I am building myself so I knew ahead of time I would not have all the answers should i run into an issue. However, I am now in desperate need of help.

I built my pc ok, installed windows, drivers etc. Once I tried to insert audio into the audio port in the back, the entire machine shut off. I panicked, opened the case, and saw that the HD-AUDIO port on the motherboard was only halfway inserted (4 pins/8pins)... Big mistake, I know.

I fixed it, inserted the psu back into the wall, noticing a spark in the outlet. Thinking nothing of it, i put it back into the back of my tower and started it up. I heard a pop and immediately shut off the system to prevent further damage. All seemed fine, but i could smell something burning on the motherboard. Tried starting it up once more but now it only start once with the power button; needing the psu to be shut off manually to turn it off or on. The fans (apu, psu) start up full speed for a couple seconds, but then die down to half speed. The system hangs for a minute or so and then completely shuts itself off.

I suspected the culprit to be psu but when i replaced it with a 625W, the same problem occurs. Today, I bought the same motherboard but the problem STILL persists. I will note that when I tried to start the psu manually with a screwdriver on the new motherboard, I accidentally tapped 2 usb prongs and saw a quick spark.

I'm totally lost and only got to use the damn thing for 5 minutes at most. The only other thing it could be is my apu/cpu. It is definitely secured and appears to be in perfect condition, lacking some thermal paste from the entire process. Please, any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot!

You do have a heatsink/fan cooler on the CPU? So hopefully you mean the cooler gets warm.

If new MB and new PSU can't make the CPU work not sure what else to do other than try new CPU.

Verify that you have two wires from your power supply to the MB both plugged in.
bummer... "All seemed fine, but i could smell something burning on the motherboard. " If you shorted something any of the components on the MB (cpu, memory, disk) could also have been fried.

You have a new PSU and new MB. Try just the CPU and MB and PSU outside of the case on a piece of cardboard and see if you can get a beep code - typically it will be "no memory". If not then you have a problem with one or more of cpu, MB or PSU. Post results if you try this test. (you are assembling on cardboard instead of in the case to rule out shorted MB by improper install in the case. You can you the switch wire from the case to start the PC)

Thanks for the reply!

Yes, I have tried placing the board on a cardboard pizza box and inserted all cords back into place. However, I get the same result. Just tried a putting it back in the case, hoping all it needed were the standoffs, but it's still a no go. I have also noticed that when the cords for the ATX12v, the fans remain spinning at full speed after powering up.

But I myself am considering a fried cpu. When I turn on the computer, the cpu immediately gets really hot so I am assuming it's getting power and that the motherboard is okay.

Perhaps I should return it?

Yep, I do have all wires correctly places onto the mobo. The system does not start up properly with the cpu heatsink and fan clasp on or off my cpu. That's why I noticed it was getting really hot.

I plan on getting a new a6 6400k apu today by trading in my old mobo in the newer one's boxing and returning my a4 5300 apu. I pray this will solve my problem today.

I will post my results to keep you updated and hopefully solve this problem for anyone else having similar issues.

Just got back from my local computer store and they tried putting my parts together themselves. They confirmed that both my cpu and mobo are dead so I returned the cpu for and an A4 6400K model.

I still have to return my two other motherboards and get my money back but I now have a working system. Thank you tsnor for making the effort to help me out ;)
