So I just got a PC from a friend who doesn't use it. Its quite old, but I don't mind as I plan to play old school gamed on it until I build my own system. Anyways, the system came with Windows XP and all my friends old games. I decided to upgrade it to Windows 8.1 by doing a clean install and formatting the drive etc.

After updating to Windows 8.1 the graphics card, a GTS 250, is not displayed anywhere in the Device manager. The output on the graphics card works and displays the PC like normal, but its recognized as a Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. This means I can't play any games and its really frustrating. I tried installing NVidia drivers that were compatible with the 250 but they all failed. They may be partially installed and I need to remove them but I don't know how. I've tried forcing the system to use the card in the BIOS to no avail. I should also mention that the Wireless Adapter stopped working when I updated and isn't listed in the device manager as well. This isn't a problem as I'll buy a new USB Wifi Adapter. I just need help getting this graphics card to work as I can't play any games on it which renders it useless to me

The specifications are (off the top of my head):
Intel Q6600 2.4GHz Processor
4Gb DDR2 Ram
500GB HDD
EVGA GTS 250
Thermaltake 430W Power Supply

Try using DDU at this link:

http://www.wagnardmobile.com/DDU/?q=display-driver-uninstaller-ddu-

This should remove all leftover files from a display driver uninstallation. After you run this, try downloading the driver from EVGA's support site directly:

http://www.evga.com/support/download/

As a side note, I believe that Nvidia stopped supporting this series not too long ago, so the 340.52 driver is probably the latest version you're gonna get, so be wary of that in the future and don't upgrade to a later version, as it will probably break things again.
