Hello, everyone.

I really, really need to be sure I'm not throwing money out the window.
I would truly appreciate your help.

I've ordered the parts to build a Coffee Lake desktop. Delivery is tomorrow. Coffee Lake works only with Windows 10, so I will buy a W10 Home edition USB.

As I have always ran (cracked) Windows 7 on my (dying) laptop, I didn't know anything about Windows 10. Yesterday I've accidentally found out that USB 2.0 webcams stopped working on Windows 10 in 2016 because of an Anniversary Update.

See:
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/2016/08/22/windows-10-update-is-breaking-millions-of-webcams---how-to-fix-i/

I already bought a Logitech C925e. I could return it and get a C920, or C922 (or C930e, though it costs double). It is very important that I can use one of these cams at their fullest (FullHD, maximum frame rate). If I can't do that, then the whole system is pointless.

I asked on Logitech's forum, no one answered. I asked on Microsoft's forums, a very kind administrator said that once I have my desktop and Windows installed he'd support me until I get the problem fixed. I read that some people managed to fix the problem by downgrading to a Windows version from before the 2016 Anniversary Update, but that didn't work for everyone. For many the issue persisted.

... does any of you have a definite answer to this problem? On my clean system, is there any way I can install a clean Windows 10 version from before the 2016 Anniversary Update, and maybe stop all updates? -- I don't need any update, I don't need any Windows apps, I just need my webcam to work. Fully work, every time I turn it on.

Thanks. A lot.

You really, really need to allow Win 10 to do its updates.
That is what protects the rest of us from your PC becoming part of a botnet.

Seriously.
You can't freeze Win 10 at a specific release level, nor should you.

Are you 100% sure your current webcam does not work in Win 10, or is this just something you read?
Looking around, I see many links for 2.0 webcam drivers for Win 10. No idea of how well they work, but they exist.

Or, Win 8.1 drivers and Compatibility mode...
That seems... odd. I have a Logitech C525 that I had prior to the Anniversary Update and it works fine. It was acting up the other day when I was trying to Skype, but that had more to do with me uninstalling/reinstalling the Skype app than with the device itself seeing it worked just fine when I used the camera app built into W10. Your camera does say W7 or higher, so I don't see why it wouldn't work since mine says the same.

To your questions about a pre Anniversary update install of W10, that's a tough one. Not allowing your system to access the most recent updates puts you at risk and keeps you out of anything they add or fix, but that's ultimately up to you.

I run a C920 on a fully updated and properly licensed version of W10.64 Home w/ no issues. I was completely unaware that there ever was an issue. I don't know what frame rate it operates at, but it's been an excellent 1080p webcam for business purposes (skype, google hangouts, zoom, etc). I just used it last week with no issues.

Or...
Time to update to a recent webcam.

Solution
From what I always understood it wasn't USB 2 that was the issue but cameras that use H.264 and MJPEG compression. That being said, the C920 uses H.264 compression and I personally use that webcam on a fully updated Win10. So I think you might be over thinking the issue as it's likely been patched. Best bet would be to contact Logitechs support and confirm compatibility with the copy of Windows you're buying.

As for the Windows edition, unless you're somehow getting your hands on a very old copy of Win10, you'll be getting the version with that specific update already baked in. There are hacks you can do to put off updates but in the long run with Win10 it's just not worth the headache. You're open to every security hole that comes along after your versions been patched. There are tools you can use to remove Windows 10 programs ( I like Geek Uninstaller https://geekuninstaller.com/) and ways to manage it from the stock install. In the end, I'd really just confirm the hardware you want works with the modern Win10 (Version 1709) and then go from there.

I have a Logitech QuickCam that I got back in 2009 that was sitting disused for the past few years.

Dug it up about 2 months ago, plugged it into my Windows 10 machine, and it worked with no problems. Been using it every week since then for video conferencing for work - no trouble at all.

Windows 10 Pro 64-bit.

As to the article you linked to - perhaps that was true when that update first came out in 2016, but if so, it must have been fixed since. I wouldn't rely on information that far out of date to continue to be true after so much time has passed.

Thank you, everyone.
:)

I guess I'll just go ahead and pay the components I'm receiving tomorrow (paying is on delivery, that's why I wanted a last advice from someone, as I can still cancel the order).

I will come back and let you know what happened.
