News US Commerce Secretary calls for CHIPS Act 2, says American semiconductor giants need more funds for fabs

While I am sure politics plays a huge roll, this could easily be funneled through military funds at this point because of the importance of ai and chips in security. I hope we finally get to the point where we can stand on our own when it comes to tech even if it costs more per chip. It just needs to be done to ensure we are not cut off.

This is stupid for 2 reasons:

1) AI will sell itself. People are jumping on to invest in companies that produce AI hardware. Case in point: NVIDIA/TSMC. Gov't investment is NOT necessary.

2) CHIPs act 1 is having gigantic regulatory issues with payouts causing fabs to stop progress. Putting a CHIPs act 2 in place when we can't get CHIPS act 1 working is just stupid.

IF companies lack funding to build fabs, then I would be okay with the gov't subsidizing low cost loans (Inflation Rate) to companies to incentivize them to build on their own dime. That way the risk is on them to complete on schedule instead of relying on tax payer dime.

This is just another money grab and the commerce secretary is an idiot.

my first thought when i see " _______ industry needs funds" is to look up how much in dividends they payed out last couple years. i PROMISE, they've paid out more than they are asking for.

all they got to do is use the money they already have, build what they need, and then realize the profit from it. you know kind of like how the free market is supposed to work !!

instead the taxpayers gets to provide all the fab making money so the manufacturers can have 100% profit on the whole thing.......

sharpening up my pitchfork and making some new torches

I love you.

it does....but then again so does public education, healthcare, etc ect & we all know those aren't getting these type of fund meanwhile Military asks for funds & magically find something like $40,000,000,000 more than they wanted...

yes, self sufficient tech is important for all, but so is a lot of stuff they seem to ignore.

There are already calls for CHIPS II before CHIPS I funds are spent? I get why China's government is bankrolling their silicon industry - they don't have one. And I sort of get why the West is following China's lead in bankrolling the tech sector with CHIPS I in hopes of swiftly bringing the fab industry to the mainland to protect from the fallout of a potential Taiwanese invasion, but calling for CHIPS II is questionable at best. Raimondo advocates for it after meeting Sam Altman? Isn't this the guy who absurdly claimed he needs $7 trillion for AI fabs? Why is this even a thing?

In the US the government spends much more on Education and Healthcare than the Military. So I'm not sure your comment hits quite how you intend.

In this case it's not even the Military asking for more.

FIRST Start paying down on the national debt and before we do a CHIPS ACT 2. Lets wait a few years and see if CHIPS 1 was even beneficial or successful.

https://www.businessinsider.com/us-...et-compared-federal-education-spending-2023-4

military budget is over 10x education so....how is 1/10th "much more" ?

That's federal government spending only.

In the US education is primarily a state and local responsibility with Education accounting for more than half of the States budgets.

Public K-12 spending 2023 = $794.7 billion.

And with Higher education Public spending at 258 Billion (My estimate based on OCD Estimated rate of .0944% of 2023 GDP of 27.36 Trillion).

That puts US public educational spending at over a Trillion Dollars.

I don't think that Military spending should necessarily be more than Education spending but to pretend that it is 1/10th and that reflects our values is not accurate. US defense spending has been trending down while education spending has been trending up.

$39 billion in grands and $75 billion in loans and loan guarantees apparently not enough to rebuild the U.S. industry.

Once more corporate America is cheating the American taxpayer by demanding subsidies. In the case of Intel, it had $11.47 BILLION in cash flow for 2023, AMD had $1.67 BILLION, NVidia had $1.6 BILLION, and Micron had $1.5 BILLION. They no more need government assistance than a submarine needs screen doors. Sounds like socialism, doesn't it?

Chips-2 or whatever they call is sounds like a great idea for next February.
Getting back to where the US makes more than 12% of world semiconductors is good for US citizens and taxpayers.

Government money is always necessary according to lobbyists.
Be it for pocket more bonuses or fatten the golden parachutes..
But its always needed.

Good ol' Socialism for the rich, aka Fascist Capitalism

Wasting public monies to boost stock market and corporate dividends. How many sub 10nm chips does the average American need? If the highend users need them, let them pay for it.

You're asking the wrong question. What you appear to be asking is how 10nm chips does the average American need to own. The answer to that is probably around zero. If you are genuinely asking how many they need. The answer is significantly more than you are thinking in your head, as many of the services we use on a daily basis as well as technological advancements we benefit from in a number of industries are using millions of these chips.

That puts US public educational spending at over a Trillion Dollars.
And yet my daughters teacher was asking parents for donations of copy paper in January, barely half way through the school year, because their allotment was almost gone, and the school wasn't providing any more for the rest of the year. Where is that trillion dollars going?

It's easier to spend a Trillion if you're wasteful or foolish than if you are really efficient.

Does the school otherwise seem really well run ? If so then I'd happily pony up more money for some paper ! That's how I'd show my support for education, especially for my own daughter, put my money where my mouth is. Bring a couple of boxes directly to the teacher so she can take ownership of it and it won't walk away like the other obviously did.

My kid's go to a charter school and get an excellent education but with only about 80% of the normal budget. They ask for assistance and usually get it because parents are very pleased with the performance and know they aren't wasteful.

Getting tired of for profit private sector companies begging for tax payers dollars to grow and make more money for their corporate execs and investment whales.
