Huawei makes some of the best and well made Android phones on the market for a fraction of the of a flagship phone. I have owned to Huawei phones and the most recent is an Honor 9X. Lovely phone features and performance.

Wouldn't be surprised if they use child labor to keep costs down.

So these guys literally can go ahead and say to anyone around the world "hey you, don't sell any hard drives to that dude over there" and everyone has to comply or else their country gets either wrecked by sanctions or invaded.

Oh man, gotta love democracy.

Senator Wicker should demand all countries in the world to require ID and background check subject to American oversight whenever a customer buys a HDD off their local retail shelves, or toilet paper because it's also strategic.

Lol the Senator thinks that somehow this will stop Huawei from acquiring Hard drives and SSD's. This complete ban of everything on Huawei has only made the company more resilient and in about 2 years Huawei will be laughing in the face of the US government

This kind of regulation is not new, nor is democracy in conflict with creating and enforcing economic, trade, and security regulations.

Is this the proof that the entire patents concept primally exists to dissuade innovation and smother legitimate competition,
or is it proof that the Chinese laugh in the face of IP…
Or is it both?
The elephant in the server room is that the US has sunk to desperate measures and that even these are failing.

It's not 1921, but this is China, not a country well known for human rights even in 2021. Child labor is not legal, but it still happens.

https://www.cnbc.com/2019/08/09/ama...xconn-used-child-labor-for-alexa-devices.html

I could link many more like this.
This whole HDD fiasco is simply caused by competition reasons. China makes good and cheap products that might threaten US companies stuff, so the US tightens or stops export. Personally I don't really like Huawei but this really sounds like anti competition, starving necessary components.

You're free to do whatever you want, as long as that freedom is supplied by the US

Standby while I charge up the biggest eyeroll in the history of eyerolls. You do realize that China has an autocratic, communist government correct? Huawei is literally run by the party and the PLA. Oh sure, they spout feel good marketing to make it sound like they are "independent" and are not controlled by the party. But they are. All Chinese companies are. If you don't submit to the party, they will wreck your company and find/start one that will. The only reasons China is relevant is because they make cheap crap with practically slave labor and they have a huge population. They literally steal technology and IP as a state-sponsored policy through hacking and industrial espionage. They have threatened the world, either directly or indirectly, with epidemics, irresponsible environmental policies (Lithium\rare-earth-based technology doesn't just appear out of thin air), and their callous disregard for safety from their space agency (see last weeks rocket return). The US and Europe; certainly not perfect given past and present actions. Many, many regrettable incidents of destructive behavior. But China/CCP are a menace.

Well congrats. Enjoy your product full of security backdoors.

Are we talking about American phones here. You were already told that the CIA and FBI asked for Backdoors into all western hardware so that they could Monitor (soy on) you for Terrorist activities (for telling conspiracy truths).

It's pretty obvious... either Huawei stockpiled tons of hardware before the restrictions came into effect (they did the same with semiconductors), or they're going through middlemen and paying markups. It's the same way North Korea's government is able to buy armored Mercedes limos despite sanctions - they have to bounce the shipment between middlemen in many different countries (at a significant cost) before receiving it.

This may be true. But I wouldn't put it past China to use the backdoors as a means of attacking other USA computers on the same network. Given their past behavior and aggressive posturing (including Salami slicing), I would rather have CIA on my phone than China or Russia (if I had to make a choice)

The problem with constantly ripping off someone else's work is that you never really understand the finer points of why they're doing what they're doing. When you're designing something new and overcoming unforseen obstacles and problems, you gain a lot of insight into the intricacies of a thing. It makes you better at what you're doing.

That's why most chinese products are cheap crap. From the basics like smelted metals full of impurities all the way up to advanced devices like CPUs with shorts and bugs. There's Quality, Performance, Cost - you only get to pick two of the three.

Are we talking about what AMD has suffered at the hands of Intel in the past... and AMD litigated them.
If we are talking this kind of thing, then you may as well apply it to all the big companies.

Intel is so great that right now IBM is having to help them out!
