Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z97X-GAMING 7 LGA 1150 Z97 Gaming Audio Networking ATX Motherboard

Case: Corsair Carbide Series Black 300R Mid-Tower Computer Case (CC-9011014-WW)

The USB 3.0 connector originating from the front of the case will not click into the USB 3.0 slot on the motherboard. The labels match, the pins match, the orientation is correct, and I've pushed hard enough to gently bend the motherboard. No pins are bent, the female end of the connector does not appear to be obstructed. What can I do?

A good wobble will dislodge it. Is it safe to start up the machine to test it, or will a loose cable cause some damage?

How taught is the cable? Give it some leeway so that it can rest easy in the port. I know what you're saying, sometimes it's not really sitting well in there. Just push it in as far as you can, and let it hang loose so there's no tension on it. Fire it up and install the drivers, see if it works. You should be fine so long as you're not shaking the PC violently.
