hey first timer here because of how frustrated i am.
specs are
mobo asus z170a
intel 6700k
16 gb of ram
i have been having problems with my usb ports. none of them of them work at all except for the usb 3.1. ive been digging around the internet and my windows folder for a few days now with no luck at all. the problem started appearing out of the blue, i did not touch bios or do any windows updates before that. i download all recent drivers from asus including usb and chipset but still no luck with getting any of the usb ports working. i did try to uninstall all usb drives in device manager which DOES solve the problem until i shut down or restart. on top of that ive also reinstalled windows three times, 2 different versions though. first two were windows 7 64 bit and now im on windows 10 64 bit
thats the scenario as of right now and will be more than glad to provide event logs if i wasnt in bed. if you need anymore information hit me up thanks.

Solution
I cannot see anything that would effect USB like this in your BIOS just by looking in the Manual besides making them work in legacy os, which Win 10 isn't one of, though on page 2-40 there is single USB port control that lets you turn on/off ports.

Does your Z170a have software that updates drivers? I think its in AI suite. Do you have latest BIOS as I think it can flash it from in windows these days?
hmm, until i read the paragraph I was looking at the MSI Z170a.. talk about confusing.

you could try running system restore and roll back to a date before this started happening. Perhaps windows update picked up the wrong drivers or something.,

to get to system restore is fun now
go to settings/update and security/recovery/reset this pc
will start in advanced start up
choose troubleshoot
chose advanced
chose system restore
pick the latest date or one before this started, pc should restart and hopefully fix this.

asus z170a*
and ive tried system restore multiple times. i also forgot to say ive reinstalled windows 3 times where the problem occured in all versions of windoes ive tried which are win7 64 bit and win10 64 which is running right now

i did download a bios update from asus but i didnt try the software updater.. ill give it a try if i can find it. if you have time to go through the manual skip to the beginning of the installing windows process. they talk about preloading a usb 3.0 driver. i did not add the files that are found on the cd, ill try what it says on the manual after trying the asus suite software
