This is partially a question, but more of me asking for insight and predictions.
How will USB 3.1 go over with current PC's?
Tons of new cases are coming out now with USB 3.1 type A and C directly on their front panel.
Will we be able to connect these case plugs into older generation motherboards, or will you need a brand new mobo that supports and would be able to power and communicate with the new plugs? Would they connect just like they do now to the pins of a motherboard, and function at full speed? Half speed as if they were 3.0's maybe?
I have an Asus Z97 pro, and it's nearly unbelievable to think that these new mobos can be that totally different from my 12 month old board after seeing previews of them at CES.
Asus and other companies are now even advertising usb 3.1 pci cards. Will those be compatible with current and past gen mobos, or will they suffer in speed similarly without using a new mobo with native support?
Very curious about this as everything in PC hardware wise is finally changing, and these obstacles are bound to come up soon. I'm also pissed now I didnt wait one more year for Skylake instead of getting my 4790k and z97, as I'm now outdated plug wise along with everybody else already...
Of course the new plug will take time to be adopted, and it won't be essential to have for a few yeats, but it would be so much easier and convenient if new cases with front panel 3.1 plugs could connect to older mobos and operate correctly without PCI addins cards.
