USB 3 Not Working Alienware 17 Windows 8

Hello all, recent purchased a new alienware 17 running windows 8, have reset back to factory settings and am having no luck with USB 3 working. USB 2 devices work perfectly fine, however, my USB 3 portable HDD will power up but wont be recognized on windows...some help please, this is driving me nuts!
