Don't rush to burry SATA too soon. SATA at today is cheap and abundant way how to extend your storage with minimal expenses. And it just works. SATA connector take very little space on motherboard and is easy to use. M.2 drives are harder to install (adding another drive often require partial cooling disassembly and board removal). M.2 drive fastening screw format (not M2 and not M3) where screws even doesn't match between motherboards, is one of stupidest things, ones who invented this, must be tried and punished for crime against humanity. I still hope that something more convenient than M.2 with easier to use connector will appear.

PCIe is also cheap and even more abundant in terms of total available lane count, especially when you consider that most SATA ports come at the expense of PCIe lanes in the chipset's HSIO lanes budget. The only thing PCIe lacks is an official standard for directly connecting internal devices over cables. A consolidated dumb 25W 12VO power + x1 data connector could easily be made smaller than SATA's, though it would be nice to have x2/50W and x4/80W elongated variants to hook up faster devices or multiple devices to one connector using break-out cables.
