Hi,

So basically, I decided to upgrade my usb dongle wireless stick, and after purchasing a new USB-AC68 wireless dongle, I'm now experiencing a huge lag spike every 8 seconds (always the same amount every time it happen).

I found a guy here having the exact same issue: http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/internet-bandwidth-networking-clinic-4/asus-usb-ac68-consistent-lag-spikes-5483020.html

The problem is I can't sign up to that since it's for Singapore people only and they force you to sign up with a SG number.

I've used every driver version available to see if ti fixed the problem, but it persists, I restarted and disabled the device, came out of sleep to see if it continued then but nothing seems to be able to stop it doing so. Any suggestions how to rid it of this ridiculous issue?

Thanks guys!

Unfortunately not, after attempting all solutions on that thread, the exact same issue...

I contacted AUS Support and they basically said just send it in for RMA.. which I highly doubt is going to solve anything except me not having an adapter at all then for a month if not more, as it really does seem like a driver issue.

Any other suggestions?

Hi I'm the guy that wrote the post on HWZ forums and I wanna shed some more light into the situation. The "fix" I came up with works only temporarily and it will revert back to lag spikes if the computer sleeps/restarts etc. I also noticed the problem coming back and going away randomly. Furthermore, this past week, it has been increasingly difficult to get the lag spikes to stop, rendering my "fix" pretty much useless and more like a Hail Mary if anything.

I have also been in contact with Asus Support and the only advice they have offered is that my device is probably malfunctioning and I should claim my warranty at my local authorized reseller. I for one, I am not convinced that there is anything wrong with my device, even more now that there are others facing the same problem as me.

I will attempt to open the issue again, maybe they'll listen if it's two of us :/

Necro'ing this because I just went through 2 of these before finding the solution while having the exact same problem. Every 8 seconds, without fail, going from 29ms to well over 1500 for roughly 1 second, then back to normal.
It's your awesome new dongle being an idiot due to shite drivers. GG ASUS, you suck.
Every 8 seconds the router is searching for and updating on the status of all nearby WiFi signals. And that's more important to it, apparently, than maintaining your connection.
Sooooo.
Open command prompt (type in "CMD" in cortana's search, right click, run as admin).

Type in:
netsh wlan show settings (then hit enter)

Second to last line will say something to the effect of:
Auto configuration logic is enabled on interface "Wi-Fi" (where Wi-Fi will be specific to your machine, so take notes)

Then type in:
netsh wlan set autoconfig enabled=no interface=Wi-Fi (subbing Wi-Fi for whatever yours shows itself as) then hit enter

Double check it worked by re-typing
netsh wlan show settings

You should see the 2nd to last or last line now saying:
Auto configuration logic is disabled on interface "Wi-Fi"

Your dongle is now no longer stupidly searching for things you don't need.
This should solve the 8 second lag spike issue.
Rejoice! And enjoy your new speeds.
But feel free to send ASUS hate mail for making us fix their problems.

I faced this issue after i changed to windows 10. I'm using Asus AC56, was working great with Win7.
The spike happens every few minutes i think. Totally can't play overwatch as everything will freeze and rollback when the spike happens.

Tried the mentioned solution and it worked obviously but I had to enable and disable it everytime after PC restarts.
I found out that, when I'm doing pinging to a certain site and I click on the WiFi logo on the taskbar, the spike will happen as it searches for other devices.
So, here's what i did and so far so good, no spikes unless I clicked on the WiFi logo on the taskbar.
- Search for the Asus utility app, WlanMgr.exe
- Right click and go Properties
- Click on Compatibility tab
- Set it to run with Windows 7 compatibility mode

PS: not a permanent solution as it might happen again after restart
Update: Seems like the main culprit is Windows 10 location service. Just turn it off.

Hello @FaceMeetMace,

Thanks for your suggestion.
You're saving my day.
I've been annoyed by this problem for almost a month.

Edit: I spoke too soon. This change makes it so the adapter can't see any networks through the usual WiFi connection interface, which is problematic if it ever disconnects. So this isn't really so much a fix as a temporary solution : (. To get it to see networks again you can uninstall the device through Device Mananger, but you'll need to re-run the steps to fix the consistent lag problem.

P.S. When you type this line in Command Prompt (netsh wlan set autoconfig enabled=no interface="Wi-Fi"), the string for Interface must be in quotes (not noted in the original instructions).

I can't believe this worked. I've had the AC56 for about a year and it has given me no problems. One day recently it randomly starts having these very regular connection drops which was completely ruining any attempt at online gaming. I troubleshot for a good four hours before stumbling upon this post. You are a hero for this.

This is one of those situations where the solution was so obscure and stupid that I'm almost more angry that this was indeed the solution than I am happy that it's now fixed. I feel very sorry for people who run into this issue but lack the troubleshooting ability to find their way to this fix, for they will just have to live with a terrible connection that shouldn't impact them in the first place.
