USB adapter and d/l speed

Hey, I just bought this USB adapter which is really small (TP-LINK TL-WN725N) and everything seemed fine until I decided to download a file. At first it downloaded at max 1mb/s but soon the speed dropped significantly that it almost stopped downloading and even webpages were not loading.

The PC is standing less than 10 metres away from the router (behind a closed door)

So is the adapter too small and I should've bought a bigger one, or?

Not going to be the size of the antenna at that distance, it could be interference or a rubbish router or adapter. use inSSIDer to check the channel, is it full speed again if you power cycle the router, or re-plug the adapter.
