I rebuilt my pc at the start of the week. I installed Win 7 x64, same as it was before, and all hardware and peripherals were installed and working correctly. But when I start my pc up the usb bluetooth dongle doesn't start. I have to unplug and plug it back in before it works.

Event viewer shows that there is a problem with BTHUSB on startup with the message "The local bluetooth adapter has failed in an undetermined manner and will not be used. The driver has been unloaded." Typical Microsoft gobbledegook in other words. This happens with all usb sockets. There have been no hardware changes.

Any ideas?

I had a similar problem with my Logitech wireless keyboard although mine failed to pass the BIOS checks. The solution for me was to update the BIOS to support Windows 7 USB.
Check your motherboard manufacturer's site.

I just remembered about this. My apologies.

Anyway, I continued to have the problem until I went to plug a usb stick into the adjacent usb socket and accidentally nudged the BT dongle. Suddenly I got the "installing new hardware" sound and message. I waited till it had installed and removed it again. I waited a couple of seconds and plugged it back in. Nothing. So I moved it slightly in the usb socket and it connected again. At that point I just left it and it has worked since.

I have used the same socket loads of times in the past when I needed a usb keyboard or mouse,or usb stick, and never had an issue with it. So maybe one of the usb connection pins on the dongle is slightly off whack.

Anyway, crisis averted. Thanks for reading and replying.
