to narrow down my question a bit: a guy is selling this :

Supported Functions: Expand,Mirror
Supported Resolutions : up to 4K na 60 Hz
signal transmision : audio + video

now it doesnt say if it can do 165hz @1080p

It does say DP 1.4 so you can lookup the capabilities of DP 1.4 -- According to the Wikipedia page -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DisplayPort DP 1.4 supports HBR3 -- If you scroll down to the 1080P support you see that HBR3 can do at least 300Hz vertical refresh. So your laptop can do it. BUT the 1.2DP on the monitor is only guaranteed to HBR data rate. That should support 144Hz. Maybe 165Hz.

but according to this linus tech tips list https://tinypic.host/i/untitled1.f7UHQ , it says it can do up to 240hz. i m not sure now how to sort this out

What difference does it make? Either way you are limited by the monitor at DP 1.2. If Asus says 165Hz then that would be the limit. But they also say that is an "overclock". So they probably are saying 144Hz is "standard" and 165Hz is overclocked.

i see, well i guess they wouldnt screw up here and ruin everything with a lower than needed DP. So my next dillema is how do i find the right USB-C to DP adapter/cable cos my laptop has a tiny hole (mini DP i suppose?) instead of a proper DP standard size port. i cant plug in monitor's DP cable into laptop
