USB C vs USB A external HDD

Will a USB C External HDD have better transfer speeds compared to the more common USB A, or are there more variables concerning file transfer speed?

It depends on the USB standard first and foremost (ie USB 2.0 or USB 3.0), not the type of connector (it would be wrong to assume that a type-C port is always USB 3.0, it can also be found on some USB 2.0 ports).

And don't forget that claimed speeds for devices are only theoretical maximums.
