My brother's computer has been acting up with its USB 3.0 driver it appears.

Windows 10 keeps playing the device disconnect sound every three-ish seconds. The only ways the sound goes away is to disable USB Root Host (xHCI) in Device Manager, or plug a device into a specific USB 3.0 port on the back of his motherboard.

He is using a GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD5 R5 motherboard.

However, when the driver is uninstalled for the VIA USB 3.0 drivers, none of the USB 3.0 ports work, even with Microsoft's driver. In addition, one of the USB Root Hosts in Device Manager will then throw a Code 43.

When the VIA driver is installed and when Windows is making the sound, Device Manager keeps refreshing every time the sound is played. It seems like the computer thinks that a device is perpetually being disconnected. The device connected sound does NOT play unless I actually connect a device.

The driver for USB 3.0 is using the latest version downloaded directly from GIGABYTE's site (I believe it's 4.90). Windows is completely up to date. I have also performed a thorough virus scan with Bitdefender Total Security 2016.

Thanks!

Some devices and keyboards simply just do not work with Usb 3.0 spec ports down to the hardware, or the keyboard decoding chip used and placed in the keyboard.

The wiring can slightly differ with a usb 2.0 spec end of a keyboard to a Usb 3.0 wired port. also.
Another thing is depending on your motherboard either in the bios or via say Gigabytes driver install suite you may have an option for fast Usb charging via the USB 3.0 ports.

Sometimes there is an option in your bios to enable or disable the feature.
When it is turned on or enabled it is often why you get that disconnect and reconnect pinging windows sound when you connect a keyboard to the Usb 3.0 ports of the case.

So look for the fast charge option and try it enabled or disabled and see what happens ok.
Also some boards have the option either via the bios to set the speed mode of the port by a standard.
If UASP mode exists try disabling it or setting the mode to normal and not turbo mode for the 3.0 ports.

UASP mode set is often the cause also.
Or referred to as Turbo mode with some boards.
Have a twiddle with the modes mentioned set to enabled or disabled, and then test with the keyboard connected.

One or the other should stop that annoying disconnect, reconnect sound windows gives out.

Thanks for the information. I've tried playing around with the USB 3.0 settings in the BIOS. There's only about 3 or 4 of them. Nothing has seemed to work.

The biggest thing is that it makes the noise only when a device is not plugged into the port, which is what I found to be one of the strangest things. Also, I didn't see any options for something related to UASP or a fast charge feature in the BIOS or software.

Right now, I've uninstalled the driver just to keep the incessant noise out of my head. However now the device is throwing a Code 43.

Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)

The USB hub failed to reset.
